The UK Government’s policy requires all timber and wood products to be from legal and sustainable sources. Local authorities in the UK and here in Ireland are also encouraged to adopt the policy.
The Central Point of Expertise on Timber Procurement (CPET) is a service of the UK Government which assists public sector personnel and their suppliers and contractors in implementing policies to ensure legality and sustainability of timber and wood products purchased.
The support CPET provides through the website, helpline and workshops is also available for local authorities in the UK and Ireland their suppliers and contractors. CPET is working in partnership with WWF in the UK and Just Forests here inIreland to encourage local authorities to implement policies on timber procurement and are offering free CPET workshops to support local authorities to improve their timber procurement policies.
The workshop is also open to other public sector staff and suppliers and contractors to the public sector.
The workshop will provide expertise in:
· Responsible purchasing -how to ensure sustainability of timber and wood products
· Implementation of a timber procurement policy
· Model specification and contract clauses
· The types of evidence that are available and how to check them, including forest certification schemes
Attendees will work through several case studies to examine the types of evidence available, so as to ensure confidence in implementing a policy and assessing and collecting evidence back in the work place.

The number of attendees is limited and spaces are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, and local authority staff from will be prioritised. Timber traders who supply or are contracted to the public sector are however very welcome to attend where spaces are available.
