UNESCO World Conference on ESD

His Imperial Highness the Crown Prince of Japan, together with Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, will open the UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development on 10 November 2014, in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

Aichi-Nagoya, Japan 10th November to 12th November 2014

“The stakes are high at UNESCO’s World Conference with the launch of the Global Action Programme on Education for Sustainable Development that sets out the strategies we need to build a more sustainable future, by making education a true force for transformation and responsible citizenship. The work over the past 10 years has built strong foundations, but the challenge for all of us now is to engage in scaling up action.” Irina Bokova said.

Director-General Irina Bokova and His Imperial Highness the Crown Prince of Japan will open the UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development (hyperlink to Nagoya site) on 10 November, 2014 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

Marking the end of the UN Decade of ESD (2005-2014), the World Conference will celebrate achievements made and identify lessons learnt, while setting the stage for the future of ESD through the Global Action Programme.

Under the banner of “Learning Today for a Sustainable Future”, the Conference will host four plenary sessions and a high-level roundtable over a 3-day period. 34 workshops, 25 side events and 42 exhibition booths will give stakeholders and partners the opportunity to showcase their work and discuss specific ESD issues. Successful initiatives from all over the world will help to generate future action under the Global Action Programme.

Around 1,000 participants are expected to attend the Conference, including representatives of UNESCO Member States, NGOs, academia, the private sector, individual experts, youth and UN agencies. So far 75 Ministers and 15 Vice-Ministers, mainly representing Ministries of Education have confirmed their attendance.

The outcome of this conference will be an important contribution to the post-2015 development agenda and will be presented at the World Education Forum, taking place in Incheon, Republic of Korea, in May 2015.

The conference on ESD in Nagoya is co-organized by UNESCO and the Government of Japan, and hosted and funded by the Government of Japan.
