Controversial Chinese plywood removed from Woodies DIY Stores
Call for Woodies to move on to Step 2- Get Certified.

Just Forests are delighted to learn that Woodies CEO, Mr Ray Colman, has removed 'bintangor-faced' Chinese plywood from his chain of DIY stores across Ireland.
China has become the world's largest importer of tropical woods. Chinese plywood companies source their 'bintangor' supplies from the Paradise Forests of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea where according to GREENPEACE "76 to 90% of the logging is illegal."

"The availability of illegally logged 'bintangor-faced' Chinese plywood in Ireland is contributing to the destruction of tropical forests, human-rights abuses, species extinction, climate change and undermining Irish jobs", according to Just Forests coordinator, Tom Roche.

Just Forests are now asking Woodies to move on to step 2- and start to stock FSC certified, Irish-made panelboard. We are asking all Irish wood users to continue to encourage Woodies to sign our Just PETITION now aimed at asking Woodies to replace the controversial Chinese plywood with FSC certified, Irish-made panel board.

Please keep the pressure on Woodies DIY Chain - The Just PETITION can be accessed at this address http://www.justforests.org/just-consumers/just-petitions-draft/just-petitions

The world's forests are under severe threat. In Indonesia it is estimated that 76-80% of all logging is illegal; in the Brazilian Amazon it is 63%, and in the Congo, 50%. The illegal logging of 'bintangor' is all the more acute now as medical scientists have discovered that the bintangor tree produces a compound that fights HIV.

"While we do welcome the removal of the Chinese plywood from Woodies Stores we feel the Irish wood consumer has a right to know that the timber and wood-based products they buy from Woodies meets the highest international standards of forest management.
The only way to meet this requirement is for Woodies DIY to become FSC certified"' according to Roche.

Greenpeace’s 2006 report Sharing the Blame exposed how endangered merbau and bintangor trees are illegally logged from the Paradise Forests in Southeast Asia and shipped to China. The trees are then made into furniture, hardwood flooring and plywood for sale within China or for export to North America, Europe, and other developed countries.
