Virtual Forest Vigil of Song and Poetry to mark UN International Day For Biological Diversity 2020
From Tullamore Town Centre

COVID-19: Celebrating Biodiversity – the foundation of Life.
"Our solutions are in nature".

Join me, virtually, for a 10-hour vigil, from the centre of Tullamore, County Offaly, to mark United Nations International Day For Biological Diversity, on Friday 22nd May, 2020.
The theme of the 2020 International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) is "Our solutions are in nature"
COVID-19 Restrictions: This event will strictly comply with the Government Guidelines – Easing the COVID-19 restrictions on 18 May (Phase 1) Meeting small groups outside. “Up to 4 people who don’t live together can meet outdoors while keeping at least 2 metres apart.”

Time: 08:00 – 18:00 (GMT)

Where: O’Connor Square, Tullamore, Co Offaly, Rep of Ireland

Why: Biodiversity is water. Biodiversity is soil. Biodiversity is food. Biodiversity is pollinators. Biodiversity is medicine. Biodiversity is health. Biodiversity is clothes. Biodiversity is shelter. Biodiversity is fuel. Biodiversity is plants and animals. But unfortunately we don’t always see biodiversity in those terms. The world’s biological diversity is under the most severe threat ever recorded.

“Ireland has listened to and acted positively on the medical science of COVID-19. We must now listen to and act urgently on the science of climate breakdown and the resulting loss of biological diversity and protect it before it’s too late.”
Tom Roche – Founder Just Forests

The key message of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), who published the global assessment report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in 2019, tells us of the ‘critical need to integrate biodiversity considerations in all decision-making in any sector or challenge, whether its water, agriculture, infrastructure or business.’

The theme of the 2020 International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) is "Our solutions are in nature".

“Retreating on climate action in the face of the pandemic is not an option given that the social and economic devastation caused by climate disruption will be exponentially greater than the COVID-19 crisis.”
UN Secretary-General António Guterras.
